Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

August 2, 2002

I have been sitting in my house, looking out my window and counting the days until cool weather will finally arrive. I have a feeling that this may be the biggest fishing year we have had in some time. The hybrids and crappie I have been catching on Oconee are looking really healthy, and the stripers on Lanier are bigger than footballs. This is the time of year when you really have to be on your game to find fish. With all the dog days coming up I have not seen a lot of guys out fishing Lake Oconee, but the fish are still there. For some fast and furious action you need to go down to the hayfields and wait for the hybrids to come to the surface. This occurs when the water is being generated and from day to day it is different. You may find a school one day that only has small fish, and then the next day, in the same exact spot you may hook into some 4 to 5 pounds. Trolling is a great option right now for hybrids and the locals are working the hump at Sugar Creek. Using a deep running shad rap and a white jig tied about 3 foot above the rap, lower the rig in the water and troll (with your gas motor) across the hump. You will know when you have a hook up and many times you will catch 2 at once. The crappie are hiding in the cool water now and if you want to catch any the best time is at night. When the heat begins to subside, the fishing will turn on red-hot again. We still have a few months left, but what a great time to get ready for them.

Doug is a licensed USCG Captain and has been guiding over 14 years. His specialty is trophy Striped Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! During the hot summer months he heads to the Chattahoochee River to pursue monster Striped bass. He fishes from a custom jet boat, built exclusively for fishing the river.
