Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 74
Since my last report, just 5 days ago, the hybrids have shown up like gangbusters here at Lake Oconee and we are just “wearing them out”! I knew this weather would finally check up and the fish would get into their normal routine and they have.
A good day of hybrid fishing for my customers is normally a 20 fish full day trip. We have been boating 20 to 30 in just a few hours and they have been really good fish. Last Saturday one of my customers caught a hybrid that was skinny as a rail. She had already laid out and was lean and mean. She tipped my Boga Grip at 10.5 pounds!
The secret is you cannot fish with a shad that is too big. Seriously, the bigger the gizzard, the happier the fish will be. Don’t think for one minute they can’t eat big bait. This afternoon while fishing a shad almost weighing a pound, I caught a hybrid weighing 3 pounds. He swallowed the bait, hook, line and sinker! If you try fishing with minnows, your success will be limited, as these fish are hungry and hard hitting and looking for shad.
Start off by trying the Pipeline and the shallow places around Great Waters Golf course. Flat line your shad over these humps and shallows and don’t walk away too far you’re your rods. It will not take long for them to start screaming! When I say these fish are mean, last week they knocked a 5500C completely out of our rod holder. That has not happened this year, even with huge stripers! The early morning bite has been really good and the mid afternoon bite has been great!
I am finding shad in Sugar Creek, and luckily right out my back door, up the Apalachee. Swords Bridge is holding a lot of bait right now also. This may be the best time to call me and go after a trophy size hybrid bass. The afternoons are beautiful here, the weather is cooperating, and the fish are hungry. So don’t wait any longer, now is prime time!
