Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 85

After a 2 week sabbatical in sunny south Florida, we are back on Lake Oconee doing business as usual. The weather has been warming up and with all the rain falling while we were gone, the lake has stained up a little.

I understand that last week the hybes went crazy, just around the time of the new moon, and anglers were catching them AT THE DAM! Of all places I would think these fish would show up, the dam would not be one of them. However after speaking to a couple of anglers, whom I really trust, the fish did show up and they were big.

I gave it a try yesterday afternoon but never found the mother lode I had heard about. There are a lot of white bass on striper point in the late afternoon and they are running around a pound or so. I witnessed a couple trolling small curly tail jigs with their gas motor on, picking up one or two on each pass. They are good table fare and if you fish with light enough tackle, you will have a blast.

The hybes will began to show up at Sugar Creek in the next few days and you can catch them on live bait, or slow trolling a goober rig. Water movement is the key and the hayfields would be the spot. Also at Flagpole you will find a lot of boats and a lot of fish too. During the bad thunderstorm yesterday I thought I would be the only crazy person on the lake, but there was one more, fishing at flagpole and smiling as I came back. He must have been wearing them out.

The boat traffic is really picking up on the lake and the fishing should be good for the next few weeks, until the lake starts to turn over. Good luck and tight lines!
