Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 61
It is on! The hybes have showed up at their normal hideouts and the official 2004-2005 hybrid season is under way. Many well intentioned anglers are putting their boats away right now, thinking the cold weather has signaled and end to fishing, but trust me when I say this, now is the time to catch the monster you have been looking for all season.
Hybes and Stripers are so different from any other fish. You almost have to view them as wolves; stalking around in packs and picking on poor defenseless creatures. The creatures I am talking about being the huge shad population that is found at Lake Oconee. As the water temp begins to fall the shad are going to find the backs of creek to seek warmer water. Where they go, so goes the hybes and when the two get together you are talking about a wild time.
Last week I found such a place and in less than 3.5 hours we had boated 28 hybes. I would be really close to the truth if I told you ALMOST every fish was at least 4 pounds; most of them were heavier, and they will full of tiny one inch shad.
You can look for these fish around the lower end of the lake. Flagpole Point, River Bend and Little Stone Mountain always hold fish this time of year. Really concentrate around L.S.M. around the latter part of this month and the entire month of January. They love getting up in there and getting free lunch on the shad that are just now showing up.
Don’t stay indoors and wish the fish would bite. They are biting and it is wild. If you don’t want to unwrap and de-winterize your boat, give me a call. Mine is ready to go!
