Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp 55-58

Lake is stained from the Apalachee all the way to River Bend

Hey Guys!

Sorry about the absences of fishing reports over the last month and a half. I have been out of the country and while here I have been catching the crappie like no one’s biz!

Anyhow, many anglers are asking about the hybes and as of today they have not showed up at the dam. Normally it is around the second to third week of March before we begin to see any activity at the dam, but there are already boats down here giving it a try.

You can find the hybes in the middle of the lake, across from Satellite Cove behind the timber. If you wonder where this is, just look for the gulls and they will point the way. There are also a lot of hybes around the hayfields at Sugar Creek and in the channel that runs next to the submerged timberline.

During this time of year these fish are beginning to get crazy and they will move, what seems like miles each day, finding water that is warming up. With the nice weather we have had over a couple of days, you may find them anywhere. When someone asks me about them, I usually tell them look for the gulls. That is always a good bet to finding the fish.

Right now as I look out the window it is raining sideways, and my cove looks really muddy. My opinion is if it stopped raining today, I believe it would take another 3 days for this water to clear up and the fishing to improve. As I understand the weather report we are in for weather like this for the rest of the week.

Which means this is a great time to get your gear in order! Grease your reels and re-spool with fresh line and do all the things you were planning on doing with your boat for last year. I am planning a trip to BPS sometime this week and stock up for the upcoming season. As soon as the fish show up at the dam, I will report it.

Thanks to all you guys who read this report and for your kind emails. See you in a few weeks.
