Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Capt. Doug Nelms
August 30, 2005
Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water is stained and 90 degrees

It’s just bad right now. No two ways about it! The water is in the 90’s, Katrina has Lake Oconee stirred up and the fish have taken a vacation. However this should come as no surprise to any one. If you look back on my fishing reports over the past 2 years you will see that this is the worse month to fish on the lake. So bad that I usually do not schedule trips during the month of August or September.

The bright side is that we get plenty of time to get our tackle and gear and boat in proper working order for the fall blitz. And according to my logs that will happen in just about a month or so. The fish will begin to turn to their normal feeding patterns, the crappie will start their migration and the hybes will be showing up in their usual places.

However if you absolutely have to go out right now and catch something, the small white bass and hybrids are schooling pretty regularly when water is being generated. One really good place is up the Oconee, and I mean up the Oconee, past I-20 and the Trestle. Go past the standing timber on the right and go to the cow pastures; you can’t miss them. There must be a million ½ pound white bass and hybes showing up in the afternoons, just schooling and churning the water like, well like schooling fish do.

The weapon of choice is a light action spinning reel with a small white rooster tail, or a white curly tail grub; something in the 2 inch range. When you see them coming up throw into them and you will catch on each and every cast!

Nothing big will come out of the herd, but it is a lot of fun, if you can catch the water just right and bear the smothering heat.

Good luck and tight lines.

Doug Nelms
