Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water 60

The fishing on Lake Oconee has been really good and really bad. This crappie season may have been the worse I have ever seen. We had some promising catches in the early part of February and when the full moon on March arrived we were hoping to just wear them out. It never happened.

I think the biggest part of the problem was no cold weather, which has put everything about 3 weeks ahead than it was last year. I spend a lot of time studying my fishing logs and from everything that I see we are running 3 to 4 weeks earlier on fish locations. The crappie anglers were so mad, many have already put their poles up and have retired to the comfort of their couches to wait until the fall. Really, no joke! As far as I can tell the big fish are done for this time of the year.

Now I know there are a lot of anglers reading this report and saying, “The dogwoods have just started blooming so the crappie must just be getting ready.” You will be able to catch the dinks, or the males, up against the bank, but the big ones are gone. That’s the bad part.

The good part is hybrid fishing is in full swing and it too has arrived about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. The dam is full of fish and has been for the past month. This has made it kinda nice because the boat brigade has not arrived just yet, ah but they are on the way. If you can remember last year during hybrid season it was awful. The water was muddy forever and the fish just didn’t show up. Last year I didn’t boat not one fish over 10 pounds at the dam (contrary to what many anglers thought, I weigh fish with a certified boga grip) This year we have caught many fish in the 8 to 9 pound range and the big ones are going to be showing up just any time.

Bass minnows are the trick right now. Since I have been doing so much fishing I have kinda grown lazy in throwing the net for shad. But in a few weeks they will be eating nothing but shad and the minnow bite will be over. Flat lines, and down lines are working fine. Just get down there and get in line and catch you some nice fish!

Keep a Spook or Sammy close by because you never know when they are going to blow up on the other side of the barrels. The north wind has been blowing wildly over the past few days, but it has given us the opportunity to float balloons over to the dam wall, which has resulted in some nice fish. Now is the time to go, give me a call at 770 354 0300.
