Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report

Water Temp: Way too hot!

I realize that over the past few weeks I have not issued a report to my favorite place on the website, Cyberangler. And the reason is very simple. It is too hot to fish. I know that many people reading this, that know me well, are thinking there must be something wrong with me to write such blasphemous words, but alas my faithful chosen, this is true.

In my cove just today I graphed the water temp at 95 degrees. My morning Starbucks doesn’t run in digits that high. As a result of the hot weather we are in the typical summertime slump. The hybes are hiding, …….God only knows where the hybrids are hiding, and the fishing is at its poorest of the entire year.

But there is good news on the horizon. With the introduction of stripers in the lake, it promises to be really good summertime action in a few years, during the dreaded summertime heat. The boys at Lanier are having a ball right now, down-lining shad to depths that would crush a nuclear submarine, while the poor guys on Oconee have to sit and wait for the lake to turn back over and cooler temps to show up.

It will happen again, normally around the beginning of October and we will be back in full swing. Until then what a great time to grease your tackle, wash your boat, play fantasy baseball, and watch Tiger win # 51.

As soon as these fish show up or I hear of them, you will be the first to know. I want to seriously say thank you to all my clients that made this fiscal year of fishing a great success. The crappie and the hybes both struggled some this year, but we had a ball and I appreciate your loyalty and your business. Looking forward to seeing you real soon.
