Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

May 10, 2007

Water Temp 73

Hey guys and girls!

We are approaching the time where the hybrids are in transition and the fishing can become really awesome. For some time I have been telling everyone that as soon as they leave the dam a couple of things happen.

First of all, many anglers have no idea where the fish go when they leave the dam, which is really good for the guides. Secondly, I have no problem telling everyone where the fish are as soon as I find them, which means I get a lot of emails over the next few months.

Today, the fish showed up in Sugar Creek and we had a ball watching them blow up on baits. While 10 pounders may not be on the menu, you can fill the boat with 6 to 7 pounders on a regular basis. The ticket is live bait, and I know that sounds like a broken record with me, but these fish will literally jump on top of these baits when they see them, which results in some explosive action.

The hayfields is where you need to start and work you way over to Port Armor and the humps that are over there. Also pulling “goober rigs” will work really well, and sometimes they produce some really big fish. The treadfin shad run is over and the gizzs should start spawning in a few days. However you can catch a lot of bait around the bridges in the am and when there is water movement.

A secret to catching the bait around the bridges is throw in the mud line when you see the current pulling it through. The fishing is red hot right now and you may need some assistance in finding them, but if you do, you will be rewarded with some awesome fishing.
