Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

May 31, 2007

Water is 85

The fishing will hopefully get into our late spring, early summer pattern within the next few days. Already we are seeing the big hybes show up at familiar places as they do each and every year. Sadly however many anglers will go home disappointed with empty coolers, wondering if there are any fish left on lake Oconee.

I will try to explain why with this little example that happened just this week. The “big hump” at the dam has had so many hybrids caught off of it, not funny! A boat was scanning the hump when we pulled up to it. The friendly angler said to me, Hey Doug, no fish here, bare as it can be. I smiled and started putting out lines as he motored away. Before he got out of our eyesight we were working on our first of many hybrids for that day.

It is a funny thing but during this time of the year you may not mark the fish as you have during the earlier part of the spring. I think it is because they are kinda like deer are about the middle of the season, they get spooky. This particular hump came up to around 8 feet and when you pull over it with your gas motor the fish are going to get away from you. We dropped the trolling motor and just eased our way up and the fish went after the bait.

Also another method we are using that may sound contrary to what I just said, is pulling goober rigs over sandy bottoms. Yesterday (true story) I pulled the best looking live bait I had all year over fish and didn’t get one bite! After about 3 hours of nothing, with customers threatening mutiny, I pulled out the crazy goober rigs and started trolling. We caught 17. I can’t explain it, but one thing is for certain. Lots of nice fish can be caught this time of year, but it really pays to know someone or have someone helping you do it.

The white bass have started schooling all over the lake and it will only get better the hotter it gets. Popping Corks and bugs are the thing to use if you want to fill your cooler with ˝ pound whites and hybrids. Also we are running night trips again, and we are catching a lot of fish with ultra-light tackle. Give us a call if your interested.
