St. Simons Island - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing Report Coastal Georgia
Nearshore/Inshore:
Just like last report, the trout fishing has been decent, but has slowed somewhat on the beaches. Trout are mainly being caught in the Backwater around docks and in the sounds and not so much on the beaches like last month..
Popping floats are the best approach in water less than 10 ft. Fishing with a carolina rig on bottom has become difficult with the bio-mass of pup sharks that move into our area each Summer, so the float is the way to go when the water temp peaks over 80 degrees.
On the beach, Triple Tail are here, but not in the numbers we heard about and saw last month. Everyone knows about where to find these fish around our beachside ocean inlet areas, so limit your catch, not catch your limit. Not enough is known about these fish yet.
Black tip and Black nose sharks are behind the shrimp boats THICK. Definitley NO SWIMMING behind the shrimp boats right now.... they have been so thick at times, you may not get back in the boat before you're full of holes or missing a limb.
Drift a live bait (Menhaden) on a float with 250 pound mono leader. Hook your live bait in the tail or in the back... HANG ON! It won't be long and you'll hook up with a bruiser...
Jack Crevalle are traveling the open water sounds and our beaches in huge schools waiting (with an attitude) to bite anything thrown their way. Some of these fish have been over 25 pounds on a regular basis. BIG FISH WITH AN EVEN BIGGER ATTITUDE!
Tarpon have finally started showing up. We have spotted several fish in St. Andrews Sound near Cumberland Island and a few have been caught as well. The large numbers expected this time of year have not shown at this point. It is worth the time to target the fish, but be ready put in some time doing it. Find the bait, and you have found the fish.... That simple.
All the tarpon I have seen this year have been right around the bait pods feeding and rolling. All the local guides prepare and look forward to to targeting tarpon each year, but we want better numbers. But then again, how many is enough? Never enough!

Tarpon numbers should get better and better as the Summer wears on. Expect Trout fishing to slow down almost to zero. Bull Redfish will show up next month!!!
