Wintertime bonefishing in hawaii

Capt. Chris Asaro
January 11, 2010
Honolulu - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's great to be in hawaii during winter for many of the obvious reasons. Add bonefishing to that list. With water temperatures relatively constant when you think about florida is setting records and a bonefish almost impossible to find, we have water in the mid to upper 70's.
This makes for a fair amount of tailers especially with the right tides. We do get fronts that can reduce visibility but that's the joy of having flats with fish that have not only tails but backs out of the water. These are not little fish as i have been preaching, if you have been following my reports. But for those that have just checked in, babies run in the 4-6 lb range and i'm not gonna get overly excited unless we hook into something over 12 lbs!

Coach Duff aka Capt.Terry Duffield has been fishing with some real hot shot steelhead anglers and has been hooking fish almost eveyday with flyrod. He even set a personal record of hooking 11 fish in a day. Remember these are not dinks. In hawaii, we have alot of coral so expect to lose a few. But for me the act fooling such amazing beasts and the scream of the drag is nirvana!

Honolulu Fishing Forecast:

expect great bonefishing the entire winter especially inbetween the frontal systems.

Target Species:

Giant Bonefish, Trevally
