May bull redfish fishing in Venice Louisiana

Capt. Shawn Lanier

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 25, 2014 Report.

The last couple of weeks here in the Venice area the Redfishing has been consistently good. The weather has settled down as far as the wind goes, so that gives us the opportunity to fish more places in case plan "A" does not work out. The Mississippi River stage in New Orleans has been around 10 feet for some time now, so all that water from 31 states is coming down here consistently instead of all at one time, which is good. No roads under water here.
Over the past few weeks I have had clients from North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and Missouri. All these folks fished several days and stayed here at the lodge. All of them wanted to target the big Redfish we have down here, with a couple of days that we targeted the smaller Redfish for eating. We had three slower days with Carl, Bill, and Glen Selke from Ohio. We had completely bluebird type days with no clouds, and we had to work really hard for every fish. They were not biting good. Other than those days, the bite has been good. The last three days has been exceptionally good, with over 160 "Bull" Redfish caught. Most of these Redfish have been between 20 to 25 lbs. with several in the thirty pound range. The largest went 39 lbs. a couple weeks ago. I have had to get extra tackle from my stock and we have broken 4 rods from the stress these Redfish have put on my gear. That is just fine. I hope the bite stays strong, and it should. The fish do not always feed, so we have to get near them and aggravate them, and sometimes they just do not want to bite, so we keep trying . The only constant in fishing is change.
Any way, if you want to come down to our area to fish ,now through Mid December is what I call the primetime to come fishing. Hopefully, we will not have any hurricanes or weird things happening down here to get in the way of a good time.
