Offshore Fishing Venice, La.

Capt. Damon McKnight
August 19, 2008
Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

The offshore fishing has been about as good as it gets if you like Yellow fin tuna. The bite the past couple of days were very good. Although we did have to fish thru more rainshowers than I would have liked to, the steady tuna action definitely made up for it. The forecasts have been very hard to go by and there have been a lot of weather changes during the day lately. The tuna are biting just about anything you've got. When they get like this it is a whole lot of fun. I haven't seen them tearing up the surface and getting aerial like this in a while. On Fri. I had the Charlie Burt gang and they finished their day going 6 for 10 and the largest was 95lbs.. Capt. Bob had Steve Cason and friends from Houston and they went 5 for 8 on Yellowfin tuna. Capt. Josh had the Doug Williams Company trip and they finished up with 6 nice Yellowfin. Saturday turned out to be a very challenging day for Capt. Bob and Capt. Josh. They took out the Sam CoCo group from Beaumont, Tx. The weather was less than desirable with more thunderstorms than any charter boat captain would like to see first thing in the morning. They decided to push out, the seas were rough but both boats ended up with a catch of Yellowfin tuna. The cobia are starting to show up in the areas they normally are this time of the year. They are a lot of fun to catch and most of them are in the 30-50lb. weight size. It looks like Tropical Storm Fay will be moving into Fla., I think I can speak for most when I say a little tension has almost been relieved. I do wish Fla. all the best. We've got open days this week including Fri. and 1 boat available on Sat. The tuna fishing is outstanding so if you want to catch a yellow fin tuna you can't go wrong right now.
