Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 16 report
The Big Redfish have been running in the outside bays and beaches surrounding the Venice area. Everyone has been having a good time, and has said that these are the biggest Redfish they have ever caught anywhere. In addition, we now have the luxury of fishing all the passes off the Mississippi River, including the main channel. The River stage has dropped off, so the salt water has moved in, the water is clearing up, and the fish have moved in with it. This happens at some point during "this time" of year. It's a great time to fish with spinnerbaits, dive baits, soft plastics, and top water plugs. Popping corks with soft plastics work fine as well, but it is not the go to bait like during the murky water times. During the heat of August we catch some fish we don't want to catch. Sharks are number one on my list. They can get so thick that they run the Redfish off, and tear your tackle all up. Sometimes, the Sharks force you to leave. We have also caught some Tripletail. We had been seeing some in unexpected areas, so I had some folks that wanted to try for some, and the conditions allowed, so we had some luck with them. Tripletail fishing should get better daily through October. The Redfishing has been great most days all year and there is no end in sight. For me, the Speckled Trout fishing will turn on in October and be on until the first of the year. We have plenty of trips booked for the rest of the year, but we have some openings for Fall as well, so if you would like to come down give us a call. Let's hope the hurricanes stay away. Thanks, Capt. Shawn Lanier (225) 205-5353.
