Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
Awesome Tuna Fishing In Louisiana!
We took a charter out yesterday to find those monster Yellowfin Tuna. With the last cold front that we had last week we figured that the bite would definately be on. We fished in open water looking for schools of mullets, pogies, or fish busting the surface.
Yesterday, we used daisy chains, rapala's, and blue and white islanders as our bait. We also had some live mullet in the boat just for back-up. The big tuna have been hitting just about anything so we felt like we couldn't go wrong.
We left out of South Pass heading out to the Mississippi Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico. About 11 miles out we found a huge slick made by pogies. We put the baits out and it was automatic. The first pass around the slick we had about a 95-100lb Yellowfin tuna which we got in the boat in about 25 minutes. Second Pass, a huge yellowfin came up and busted the squid chain twice before finding the last one with the hook in it. We fought him for about 30 minutes and got him in. This tuna went about 135lbs. and was spitting out pogies as he did his famous tuna dance on the floor of the boat. For those of you who aren't sure what that is, it is when he hits his tail on the floor of the boat so hard and for so long that you are sure you have structural damage to the boat. Anyway, we ended up catching 3 more for the day all between 45-60lbs.
The fishing down here in Venice, Louisiana is awesome right now. Whether your fishing inshore or offshore the fishing doesn't get much better than this. Thanks for reading our report and look for our report next week because with this cool weather we are finally starting to have we should have some good reports on big Wahoo. Capt. Damon McKnight
