Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

One-hundred pound Yellowfin Tuna Day.
The weather down in South Louisiana is starting to shape up. The fronts have slowed down and we have been able to get offshore. This time of year we fish the midnight lumps which is a big producer of yellowfin tuna, blackfin tuna, wahoo, amberjack, grouper, and snapper.
We arrived on the lump at about 9:00 a.m. on 1-27-01. I started the chum line to get some of the huge yellowfin that we have been catching in our chum line. Unfortunately, the bite didn't start until 2:00 p.m. but, when the bite started, it was on. First fish 140lb. yellowfin. He took a piece of bonita sent back into the chum line. It took about 45 minutes to land him. Second fish, 101lb. yellowfin, he took a piece of bonita 5 ft. under the boat. We had bonita all around the chunk, but the big boy came out from under the boat and grabbed the bait. Third big fish of the day was the best. I was throwing a yozuri hydro-tiger back into the chum line and the big yellow fella came up and exploded on the bait. Try and imagine a 130lb. bass hitting a surface lure. That is exactly what is was like. Fortunately for us, the big yellowfin was eating our chum most of the day so we landed him in about 15 minutes. We caught him on a shimano 6500 spinning reel with 65lb power pro. Once, those big fish have a full belly they don't fight nearly as hard. We also caught 5 blackfin. Some were on the yozuri and some in the chum line.
The fishing this time of year is every charter boat captains dream. One stop, the fish are there. I have included a picture of the big yellowfin on the picture section of the web site if anyone wants to get a look at him. If you want to get in on some of this action give us a call.
