Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

The offshore fishing in Venice, La. is Red Hot.
The Lump season in Venice, La. has now ended. It was definately one of the best years we have ever had. We were averaging at least six tuna per day along with a few amberjack and wahoo. But, the offshore fishing season is just kicking off.
Red snapper season opened on April 21st, so we have been catching a lot of snapper with most of them being 10-15lbs. and only a few over 20lbs. One type of fish that we have been catching a lot of while snapper fishing is cobia. We have been catching at least two cobia on every trip we have taken since snapper season opened. On some days we are catching 6-7 cobia. The strange thing is that they are not supposed to be here yet. The water temperature is still to cold and it wasn't even May yet. The only explanation that I can give is that the limit and management of cobia are working. I can't wait to see what it is like in August when they really move in.
We have also been doing a lot of trolling for Marlin, dolphin, wahoo, and tuna. Just because lump season is over it doesn't mean that we stop catching all those big monster yellowfin. We mainly troll the rip lines, grass patches, oil rigs, and floaters. A floater is a rig that moves. They are usually found in water depths over 1000 feet. We have been very successful around the floaters with tuna and wahoo this year but haven't caught any marlin yet. Last year if you were the first one to arrive at one of the floaters you had a good shot a catching a blue or white marlin. The offshore fishing is just starting to move into full swing. We will have some great reports to post and hopefully a few pictures to add to the picture gallery.
Also, we have an article coming out in the June issue of Sportfishing magazine which should be out in a few days. This article is about deep drop fishing. We were dropping baits down to the bottom in depths over 1000ft. to set world records on unknown fish. This article is the feature article so it should be a good one.
Thanks, Capt. Damon McKnight/Super Strike Charters
