Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing the Rigs
The weather down here in Venice, La. has been nasty the past few weeks so we haven't fished very much. The days that we did make it out we had better than averaged catches. We fish the rigs a lot this time of year for Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, and Cobia. The rigs or platforms that we fish line the coast of Louisiana and act as artificial reefs. The rigs attract the bait fish, and the bait fish attract the big fish.
We have mainly been catching plenty of cobia and amberjack. The amberjack have been so thick that we have actually been running away from them. Two years ago you couldn't find amberjack. What a come back they have made. The cobia have been thick as well. Most of the cobia are in the 30-40lb. range. The biggest cobia we have caught so far this year was by Toby Broussard(regular customer), the fish weighed in at 65 pounds but there are plenty out there bigger than that.
The blue-water fishing has been good as well. Plenty of dolphin, which some are going over 50lbs. on the scales. The Tuna have been biting good also. A lot of boats fished the Isle of Capri tournament this past weekend and one boat caught the state record yellowfin weighing in at 205lbs. He put an extra 156,000 dollars in his pocket for that one. So, the big tuna are out there. Marlin and Wahoo are really the talk of offshore fishing right now. Plenty of fish to catch and we are having great weather now that Allison has moved out of the Gulf.
