Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
Top Water Tuna
This past week we had Dr. Richardson and friend down again to go offshore fishing. This summer has been one of the best that I can remember. The Yellowfin Tuna are everywhere. Everyday day that we have fished has been about the same as this one.
We headed out to the Mississippi Canyon where most of the fish have been. We went out to the floaters which are exactly 64 miles out of the pass. We weren't there five minutes and the tuna were busting on the surface. It took a few tries but we were finally able to get in casting distance of the school. We casted our top-water baits in and hooked up immediately with an 80lb., and about a 60lb. yellowfin. We got the 80lb. tuna in the boat but we lost the 60lber. on his first run. While reeling in the loose bait another yellowfin about 70-80lbs. smacked it. Unfortunately we lost that one as well. We ended the day with two nice yellowfin and a lot of missed opportunities.
We are using light tackle for these big fish. If you have ever seen a 10lb. bass hit a top water bait just imagine what a 100lber. would look like. The power that these fish have when they hit will make you scream. I don't think I should put up the words that I usually hear, but you know what they are.
The fishing this summer could not have been any better. Considering the heat, the fish have not gotten lockjaw at all. September and October are two of the best months of tuna fishing that we have down here in Venice. If you have ever thought about getting serious about a fishing trip now is the time. It is definately going to be a great two months from what I have seen so far this year. Capt. Damon McKnight/Super Strike Charters
