Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tuna in October!
The fall months are here and so are the big yellowfin tuna. This time of year the mullets move out of the passes and out into the Gulf of Mexico to spawn. These mullets which carry many eggs, cannot stay afloat inshore in the brackish water, so they move out into the gulf where the salinity levels are much higher. The tuna know they do this every year and move in close to the passes to greet the sluggish, egg-filled mullets, which are easier to catch while carrying all those eggs.
This feeding frenzy which occurs during the months of October and November makes tuna fishing very easy. This is when you have a shot at catching some yellowfin way over two-hundred pounds. The offshore fishing is very consistent for yellowfin, blackfin, wahoo, and mako sharks. Two years ago during this time we had a blue-marlin and a yellowfin tuna on at the same time. It doesn't get much better than that.
We have not been getting out much this month due to the weather. We did make it out yesterday and caught tuna and dolphin. We had to cut the day short because of the weather conditons. Another boat that was out did fight the weather but they also caught two big yellowfin at 120lbs. and 170lbs. All on live bait. The fish are definately here and will stick around for at least the next couple of months. We have been catching most of our tuna on top-water baits by casting and trolling.
