Louisiana - Venice & the Gulf of Mexico

Capt. Damon McKnight
October 30, 2001
Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wind Go Away!

The offshore fishing conditions have been very unfavorable so far this month. We have made it offshore for a grand total of five times. The wind has been blowing 25+ knots most of the month. Our seas have been averaging 6-8ft.

The days that we have been able to get offshore have really been paying off. Last Sunday, we had Kenneth Oberholtzer and friends down from St. Louis, Mo. They are all over 65yrs. old. But, they sure know how to reel in a tuna. The sea conditons were five feet most of the morning. Our first stop we had a yellofin tuna on in about 5 minutes. We were slow trolling live hardtails with 6/0 circle hooks from mustad. The tuna were biting and it was on. We started fishing at 8:00 a.m. and by 10:00 a.m. they had all the tuna they wanted. The tuna were averaging between 60-100lbs. We headed back in and finished off the day with a couple of nice cobia.

This past Friday we had Nick Hardin and friends down from Texas, and on Saturday, we had Chris Semon and co-workers from C.C. Lynch and Associates from Mississippi. The wind was blowing way to hard to get offshore so they decided that they would go inshore instead. Well, there is only one consistent place in Venice to fish with a 30 knot wind and that is at the Southwest Pass Rocks. This is a rock jetty that is at the end of the Mississippi river leading into the Gulf of Mexico. The catch for both days were identical. They caught their limit in bull reds (over 27 inches) and they caught their limit in redfish under 27 inches. They also, caught plenty of mangrove snapper, small grouper (which we had to throw back), drum, bull croaker, and a few flounder. All I can say is that the fishing can't get much better than that.

Although the wind has kept us inshore for most of October, we still have November through April to catch all of those tuna and wahoo that bite so good during these months. A lot of people think that the summer months are the best months to fish out of Venice, Louisiana. Actually, the winter months produce more and bigger fish.

Until Next Time,

Capt. Damon McKnight
