Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

More Tuna Madness on the Lump!
The Last two weeks have been very slow for tuna fishing but that all changed yesterday. John Witacker and friends from Illinois managed to boat 19 blackfin tuna, 1 rainbow runner, and 1 beeliner snapper. The lump fishing this year has been incredibly good.
Last week we had Jason Cannon from Sportfishing Magazine, Scott Leon from Marlin Magazine, and the film crew for SportFishing magazine down to do a repeat of last years incredible tuna bonanza. But, they didn't cooperate. The fishing was as slow as could be. We did not catch very many fish at all. We had two arctic fronts come through and just about shut down the offshore fishing altogether. Finally, the spring time weather has arrived and the conditions are now perfect.
Here is a little lagniappe on the midnight lump from yesterday. A 702lb. mako shark was caught from the boat fishing right next to us. It was an incredible sight to see him sky rocket out of the water. He measured 9.5 feet. I am sure this will be in the news down here in Louisiana very soon. Our current state record Mako shark is 412lbs. and it will stay our record. The 702lb. fish will not make the record books because of the way it was landed. A nearby trawl boat had to lift the fish out of the water with its booms and place it in the 25ft. Mako boat (Very Ironic) that caught him.
We will be chasing the fish around the Gulf and we will be post our catch next time out.
