Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Gargantuan Tuna on The Lump!
The weather has been keeping us in a lot lately. Socked in fog, thunderstorms, wind, rain, and rough conditions. But, when you can get out it is well worth the trip. Fortunately this past Saturday, the weather conditions were perfect.
We left out at 6:15 a.m. on 3/15/03 in search of Tuna. We had a little bit of a slow ride through the pass because of fog, but once we hit the gulf it was easy riding all the way out. We anchored up on the lump and began fishing. Before I even put out the first piece of chum we already had fish under the boat. The first couple of strikes were kings and bonitas but it didn't take long for the tuna to show up. Within the first couple of hours we had close to 10 blackfin tuna in the boat and by the end of the day we had 17 blackfin tuna. At about 1:00 p.m., the mammoth hit. The fight lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes but in the end we had a 178lb. yellowfin in the boat. Biggest tuna of the year so far for us. He was a monster. Out of his mouth hung someones 400lb. leader that had obviously done battle with him before. Fortunately for us they lost and we won.
The fishing down in Venice is awesome right now. Although we are only getting to fish between the weather days. We are now starting to move into spring and the weather should get back to normal.
Till next time,
Capt. Damon Mcknight
