Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

July Fishing in Venice
Here is a run down on what the fishing is like offshore right now. The grass lines and floaters are producing plenty of big bull dolphin and of course chicken dolphin. If you have ever wanted to catch a dolphin fish, Mahi-Mahi, or a Dorado now is they time(they are all the same fish). The yellowfin and blackfin tuna are thick as well and have been averaging 30-60lbs. Most of the Tuna coming in are yellowfin. Usually in Mid-July the bigger Tuna start showing up averaging 80-100lbs.+. Billfish and Wahoo are not quite as thick but this is turning out to be one of the best Billfishing seasons I have seen. Usually July produces bigger and a lot more billfish.
Around the rigs the Cobia are showing up thicker than ever. Average size has been about 20-30lbs. with an occasional 40lb.+. Not many people know what Cobia are but they are one of the best eating fish in the Gulf. Right before Bill hit we limited out on Cobia in just under 1 hour. The amberjack have been on just about every rig that we fish in over 200ft. of water. The average size that we are getting in the boat have been 30-40lbs. We are hooking bigger ones but they make it to the rig and break us off much faster. Now for the snapper. The Red snapper fishing has been a little slow. They are mainly hanging on wrecks and bottom structure. The rigs have not been producing a consistent catch of Red Snapper. The mangrove snapper have been a different story. Just about every rig is holding mangroves and they have been averaging about 10lbs. We have had some very good catches. But, once you hook one, they usually run straight to the rig. You really have to put the pressure on them which makes it a lot fun.
That is the run down and this is what you can expect to catch right now fishing out of Venice, La.
We still have open dates for this WEEKEND and throughout July. Take advantage of it now. August is booking up fast and you won't have much time to get the kids out fishing before school starts again.
