Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Line Shy Snapper and Easy to Catch Cobia
We made our trip yesterday with Jason Cannon of SportFishing Mag. for mangrove snapper and Cobia. We were able to chum up some snapper but they were very finicky. We caught two and lost several others to the rig. We had to go down to 30lb. test but it was almost impossible to get the 10lb. plus snapper out of the pipes. After three hours of feeding the line shy fish we opted to go after one of my favorites, Cobia. As usual they were thick. First one hit a jig, jumped once and threw the hook back at us. 1 hour later we had five in the boat and another one lost. We came in 1 shy of our limit. But, five in an hour is plenty. They were all about 25-30lbs. Most of them were eating on the surface. We will be bringing our snapper and cobia fishing to an end in the next couple of weeks. If you want to do this type of fishing we have a couple of days in the last week of October available. The tuna fishing should really turn on after this next front. Once the water temp. in the Gulf hits 75 degrees and lower the fish really start biting good. The temp. now is 77 degrees. The mullets have not started to move out, mainly because of the warm up we've had but this should be it. After the next cool down they will be heading south fast. Then the real tuna action begins.
