Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tuna and Mako's--Not a good Mix!
Yesterday we had T-Bird who is a local fisherman and Ms. Kathy Morrison from Texas. Our main target was Tuna. Kathy who has caught just about every fish in the Gulf has never caught a yellowfin over 100lbs. and that was her goal. She didn't get the 100+lber but T-Bird did, barely. Late in the day, after catching literally 40 Kings and a lot of Bonita, the big fish bit. He took out a lot of line and we knew it was a good fish. Two hours into the fight the fish came straight up from about 20ft. like a missile. As I was sticking the gaff into the fish about a 600-700lb. Mako decided he wanted to take a bite out of him. What an Unbelievable Fish! The Mako had already taken the tail off the Tuna, since that is usually the first thing they do, they can catch'em easier that way. Then right below the boat as I was trying to get the fish up with the gaff the Mako came in, bit the stomach of the Tuna, and for some reason released him. Thank God, he could have taken the fish and my gaff easily. Then we were able to pull the fish in. Amazingly the Tuna was not busted up bad and all the meat was saved. The Tuna weighed about 140lbs. after losing the tail and all the blood. We ended the day with the 140lber, 1 blackfin, and a few beeliners. I think if we could have gotten our baits passed all the kings we would have caught more fish. But, didn't happen till late.
As for the weather man, wrong again. It was like a pond out there compared to last Saturday but it definately was not 1-2's.
