Louisiana - Venice & the Gulf of Mexico

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Venice, La. Offshore

The offshore fishing has been very good lately. Definitely starting out stronger than last season for sure, but with that, so has the weather. This is one of the windiest, rainiest, coldest January's I can remember. Yesterday, the alarm clock went off and I could already here the wind blowing. First thought was that the weather man might have gotten this one right and he did. Most days this Jan. they have been about a day late. I Walked outside and not only was the wind howling and 50 degrees, but there was a slight drizzle coming down side wards. Basically, just a nasty day for offshore fishing. I got all the gear ready, made a couple of sandwiches just in case we did go and went to pick up my crew from Indiana and Florida. I pulled up to the dock and they were all standing there in full Grunden's gear, bright orange, and looked like they were getting ready to board an Alaskan king crabbing boat for the season. I asked them if they were sure they wanted to go out today and told them it was going to be rough and wet, they said lets go. The ride out was good, there was a stiff 20 knot N.E. wind blowing but not at all bad. When we arrived to our destination it was a very choppy 3-4ft. sea about 3 seconds apart. The fishing started out slow for us but we ended up with 1 black fin and 3 yellow fin tuna (50-80lbs). The seas building the whole time, I looked up after the third fish came in the boat and it looked extremely Hawaii 5'oish. I told the crew it was time to head in and it was a go and left the fish biting. The ride back in was a long one, but everyone was happy we made it out. The fishing right now can't be beat. There are plenty of Wahoo and Tuna. We are just in the beginning of the season so we have a long way to go. Hopefully the weather will straighten out for us. We will be back out the next fishable day.
