Louisiana - Venice & the Gulf of Mexico

Capt. Damon McKnight

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Venice, la. Fishing

We were able to get a couple of days in this week. The weather couldn't have been better and couldn't have worked out better for us today. Yesterday, we had two boats out, Capt. Bob had the Bob Calden group down. This was their fourth reschedule and finally made it out. They started the morning wahoo fishing with only one strike, change their tactics, and ended the day with 9 Yellow fin. I had the Dale Anton Group down from St. Louis. We fished yesterday and today with close to the same results. As soon as we pulled up to our spot the tuna were busting everywhere. At first they wouldn't eat and then for some reason they just turned on. We finished up with 8 tuna on the day, the largest was about 55lbs. But, they fought and lost as many as they caught. After that we moved on looking for bigger fish but none were found. Today, we knew we would have a quick morning trip, but with the way the tuna bit yesterday, I figured we had more than enough time before the weather and wind got to us. The only thing we weren't prepared for was losing fish. We knew we were fighting the clock with weather coming but for some explained and unexplained reasons they kept getting off. 75% was user error, the other 15 just fishing. The guys did put 6 in the boat losing 7 or 8. Looks like the weather has us in for a day. Probably back at on Friday. We have open days next week and throughout April.
