Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Venice Offshore
This past Friday we had the Ammons crew over from Alabama. Mr. Ammons use to run the 80ft. Dreamin On which was well known in our area. He's been fishing these waters for a long time, and his son Scott, who was also with us, put himself thru school being a deckhand so we had some extra experience on the boat. They were looking to put a few fish in the box and tuna was the target. Bait came easy, the seas were flat calm, and you couldn't ask for anything else. Our first stop produced 1 bull dolphin. Scattered grass moved in so we took off to a sure thing. Pulled up, put two lines out and got two YFT's on immediately. Then it went cold. Another hour of drifting waiting for the next bite and we moved again. The next stop was on fire, then cold, then it was on. We put the first line out and it was immediately drilled by a YFT. Got him in the boat. After that we had a little bit of a slow period then it was wide open. We put 3 more YFT's in the boat and lost another three. Every time the fish would bite it was doubles which always add to the excitement. They finished off their day with 6 Yellows and 1 Bull. Most of the tuna are in the 60-85lb. range. Perfect catching size, you don't put too much time in, like the fish we had two weeks ago, but it is still enough to make you appreciate how strong these fish are. Saturday was a different day. Po Lo and friends came over from the Lake Charles area. Woke up to somewhat of a breeze, checked the wind and the light house and it was blowing about 13 knots and had been blowing above 10 knots for most of the night. I figured it would be choppy but not to bad. Fri. had a northeast current and the wind was coming out of the southwest so it would be working with each other. Well, they did that for sure because it increased the current about 2 knots stronger than it was on Fri. which changed our entire fishing day for Sat. Bait was a big problem for us, it wasn't where I had planned because of such a strong current, we had to go searching. Finally about 9:00 a.m. we found what we were looking for, loaded up and off we went. First stop, nada. Second stop where we went to on Fri. We were locked in to this area so we were there for the day. It took about an hour to get our first fish on which was a bull dolphin, he came off about 10 seconds into the fight. A little frustration set in about this time. Then we had tuna busting around us but no takers. After another 30 minutes we finally got our first YFT on and it was a good 75lber. Put him in the boat followed by a bull and cow dolphin. The wind picked up A LOT! Called it a day 70 miles out and made the long trek back only to be greeted with a stiff 20 knot wind out of the west into a falling western moving tide. The seas picked up and it got ridiculous for the ride in. We got to take Sunday off due to unseasonably strong winds. We've got open days this week and next. Fri. and Sat. came available due to a cancellation if anyone wants to grab it. The tuna fishing is very good, just like it is every July. The bigger fish are here, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.
