Louisiana - Venice & the Gulf of Mexico

Capt. Damon McKnight
October 9, 2007
Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather: Wind and Rain!

As everyone already knows the weather has been very windy along with plenty of rain. BUT it looks like we are going to get a break from it over the next several days if the forecasts hold true. We have Thursday open to fish and Saturday just opened up. They had to reschedule and miss what will more than likely be one of the least windy days we have had in a while. Right now offshore you can expect to catch YFT, anywhere from 30-150lbs+, it happens every year at this time. All depends on how lucky you are that day. This is the right time of the year, the big boys should be hanging not too far out of the passes. Wahoo, we usually get a good run of nice sized wahoo, 40+lbs. As soon as the mullets start to move, the bigger wahoo will move in as well, the cold front that is about to move thru may be the trigger. Snapper, right now the snapper bite couldn't be better. The season ends on Nov. 1st at 12:01 a.m. We've got 22 more days to snapper fish this year. It is very possible there may not be a snapper season next year (2008). No one knows for sure yet, but I wouldn't take my chances. NMFS may not reopen snapper for next year or it will be cut in half, as most people already know, I wouldn't be surprised if it happens. This may be the last time we can fish for snapper legally, for who knows how long. You should take advantage while you can. The cobia bite is very good as well, but this cold snap might shut them down a little. We'll have to wait and see how cool it actually gets down in Venice. The weather is finally looking up for a change and we have open days. Give us a call.
