Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 23, 2014 Report
We have really been catching a bunch of the big Redfish down around the mouth of the passes of the Mississippi River, and the weather has not been a problem as far as getting to the areas that are holding fish. The light seas have let us move around if we need to. No need to be an expert at buying live shrimp, because these fish hit lures and plastics best. When I have clients that want some smaller Redfish to take home, I have brought along some frozen shrimp to get them to come out of the canes, but they have hit plastics under a cork and spinnerbaits. Doing any kind of fishing this time of year is work due to the heat, so we have been getting an early start to beat some of the heat. I have had clients from Texas, South Carolina, Florida, California, and Montana here over the last couple of weeks, and they all have said that they have had a great time. I have had a good time as well, but a couple of days off has reenergized me for fishing the last week of June. We are taking off a few days for the fourth of July, then we will be going at it again.
The Mississippi River stage is still hanging around nine to ten feet, so it is still muddy with a strong current and we are fishing the outside. The Redfish like murky water. That is why they like it here around Venice. The fertile murky water from the Mississippi river is what makes the habitat for the big Redfish the best in the world. It is the time of year where if I have a fit crew with me we should catch 30 to 50 of these big fish each day. You have to be in shape to do it. Let me know if you want in on some great Redfish fishing. No pain no gain.
