Venice Louisiana Redfish Fishing

Capt. Shawn Lanier

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 3 2013 report

Hello out there. I finally had a few days off and wanted to give a fishing report for the Venice area. I looked at my last report from June and this report looks about the same. Lots of fishing. I have had four different groups from Texas fish with me, as well as two groups from Tennessee. Also, some folks from California and Montana. Most everyone fishes three days with me and stays at the Fish On Lodge here in Boothville-Venice. One thing about fishing is that every day is different. It keeps it interesting. Also, everyone has really been great hanging around and fishing with. A majority of my clients have been wanting to target the fish that makes the Venice Louisiana area unique from any other fishery: the big "Bull" Redfish. These fish are here twelve months a year. They are not always where you left them, but they are around. We have been on them. The heaviest one the last couple of weeks was 39 pounds. Many in the thirty, and literally hundreds in the twenty pound range. We catch and release the big ones. We have averaged 25 to 40 per day in the boat with almost half that many missed. I have to tell you that the more experienced fisherman is going to get more to the boat. The main reason folks miss these fish is due to giving the fish slack in the line ( much of the time they swim at you at 25mph and you have to catch up to them) and another reason is you have to be mobile around the boat while fighting them on light tackle. If the Big Redfish runs to the back of the boat, one must quickly go to the back of the boat with the rod tip three or four feet in the water to keep the line under the engine, power-poles and trim tabs, so as not to cut the line. Bill Dance would probably miss one of three fish. To me, the "Bull" Redfish is the most exciting and challenging fish we have to catch down here. Most people from South Louisiana are much more interested in Speckled Trout fishing, because they want to have a fish fry. They don't understand that some folks from far away fish all over North America, and they already have fish in the freezer at home. They don't have the big bad boy Redfish. We do, and the mouth of the Mississippi River is the best place on the planet to catch them. ON ARTIFICIAL LURES! The folks from Longview, Texas had a great time throwing top water plugs for Reds this last week. Boom! No need to be at the bait stand for shrimp at four in the morning. Our fishing trip wont be a disaster before it begins because the bait died overnight at the marina or whatever. No one bummed out. It's about having a good time. Don't get me wrong. I like catching Speckled Trout. I like eating them. We had several good days on Specks the last couple of weeks when my clients wanted to target them. All we had to do is try, however one time was luck. We pulled up somewhere and a fellow yelled for us to come over and anchor down next to him, because he almost had his limit of Specks. We did as ordered and loaded the ice chest and live well. Not a limit, but so what? I don't have to catch them to put food on the table. I am not starving. I like the challenge of catching fish with lures, and I believe it is more rewarding. For me, what makes this fishery special are the Redfish. Big ones. They are fun to catch. They are exciting to miss too. Come down and get in on it. September through December is a great time to get in on the Great Redfishing action. After mid October the Speckled Trout action, fishing with lures, really turns on as well. Take some time off and come down and get
