Huge Sharks on Stellwagen Bank

Capt. Rich Antonino
August 28, 2008
Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report

Perfection. Yes. I think that today was the perfect trip. It hasn't really happened before, but we were close today. Why? It was a shark trip for one person who was in from Idaho and he wasn't concerned about taking catch home. So, shark fishing it was. We fished east of Stellwagen today, getting out there by 7:00 with lines in the water. We landed a nice pollack at the first spot....live bait... It didn't take long before a monster blue shark hit our slick, wiping out the pollack. We didn't hook the first one, but it was our first one. The next one to hit, hit a mackerel and we were on. 150-175 pounder. Nice fish, but not the one that hit the pollack.

Not long after that, we got a 300+ pound blue shark. Big, big fish on standup gear. A couple more blue sharks, then....off to the races...We have 5 Okuma Titus Gold 50 wides spooled with 80 pound mono, but two have 400 yards off 80 pound Power Pro beneath....We almost got spooled before we could get our lines cleared when the fish hit!!!! 700+ yards in a heartbeat. We chased and chased and got the line all back. Slowing down, the shark took it all back very quickly. I think we had a big mako on. No doubt! After 40 minutes, nothing. It threw the hook. Aaarrrghh. But that's shark fishing.

A few more sharks later and bam! Again. Loads of line peel off. A surface run. It ran and ran and ran. We chased, chased and time crawled by. It was a stand-still. 75 minutes later, we saw color. Massive blue shark. This shark was 500 pounds. No exaggeration. Massive. We don't eat them, so we released it. I've never seen a shark it's equal. It took 90+ minutes to finally subdue and release it, but whoa! Awesome day. We're doing it again tomorrow. Same customer. And on Saturday with another lucky customer!!! I love shark fishing. See you out there. Be safe, Rich Antonino, Black Rose Fishing Charters, 508-269-1882
