Pollack SURFACE BLITZ and cod roundup

Capt. Rich Antonino
May 3, 2010
Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sunday, May 02, 2010
I thought I was seeing things today! It's been 28 years since I've seen pollack busting on the surface! It was an all-out blitz, with pollack coming out of the water completely while chasing sand-eels. I thought it was tuna for an instant. Soon. Soon. It'll happen soon.

Needless to say, the action today was off of the charts. Thank goodness Matt was on the boat today. We landed 70 pollack and keeper cod in the first 90 minutes between three guys! Some of the pollack were caught 10' below the boat! It was one of the most epic, day-long events I've ever seen. We moved around enough to look for cod beneath and aroudn the pollack schools. That was incredible. We had a few double-header 15 pound cod events. That was cool. I loved watching the Okuma Akena reels in action combined with the Catalina inshore rods. Len, sitting down all day, jigged up with the Cedros Jigging rod and Makaira 15II (it's a tuna reel that is small enough to make codfishing enjoyable.) I used a lighter rod than for tuna, so the battle was more fun. What a day! Perfect weather...chilly actually, until we hit 2 miles out and got slammed with 20+ kts of 85 degree winds! Incredible day and lots of fun with an awesome crowd... Next stop, TUNA! StingoFish PBJ jigs...200 grams...find them and use them. They're incredible and it's what we've been using. Nice single hook; perfect action for what we're doing right now. I also have 300 and 400g for crowded boats/guys who sit and fish(Just drop straight down). Cast jig into drift for best results. I can't say enough about using light tackle and these jigs. What a blast. Isn't that what fishing is about? Capt. Rich Antonino, loving life.

We're the small charter specialists for private 1-4 person groups and shared charters. We fish where the fish are--cod/haddock on Stellwagen Bank, huge sea bass in Buzzards Bay, bluefin tuna on Stellwagen Bank, sharks off of Martha's Vineyard and Wildcat Knoll, Stripers off of Provincetown. We have a great website; visit us often and meet us as friends. We have lots of fun out there and cater to both the novice and veteran alike. Our rates are great and you don't have to get 6 people!!
