Fishing Report - Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod

Capt. Rich Antonino
April 6, 2007
Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report

Finally the weather cooperated this spring and the winds died down nicely to allow us to get offshore for the first trip of the year. As it was the first trip of the year, I took a couple of friends out with me to test the waters and see where the fish have congregated. We left from Plymouth and the Black Rose looked and ran great. Over the winter, I painted the inside of the boat a wine-red color using a truck liner material (Grizzly Grip). It looked amazing and gave us great footing.

The weather was perfect for April 1--it was sunny and the 5 MPH SW wind blew us out to Stellwagen Bank nicely. We fished in 190' of water to the SE corner of Stellwagen, with the plans of moving north along the eastern edge of the Bank and then cutting back across the Bank by the BE Buoy to end the day. I wanted to hit 20+ spots to test the action.

We found great action for haddock in 190-200' of water in several spots. These are some great eating fish and they were all around 22 inches. We then headed a bit deeper to fish for wolffish around some deep rockpiles. We hit a bunch of cusk instead, which we returned. Drifting into deeper water, we landed two of the largest redfish that I have ever seen!

Around noon, we headed back west and found the cod stacked up in 230' of water where we fished and limited out (10 cod/person) pretty quickly. It was amazing fishing! We caught several double-headers and most of the fish caught were above the legal limit(24") by several inches. In fact, we caught very few small cod there. Amazing.

Heading back across the Bank at the end of the day, we saw 20 boats fishing in 150' of water just on the Eastern Edge. The fishing was amazing and the whale show that we saw was amazing. Plus, the wind switched to the SE and followed us home! Great start to the year.

We have a great website; visit us often and meet us as friends. We have lots of fun out there and cater to both the novice and veteran alike. Our rates are great and you don't have to get 6 people!!
