Fishing Report - Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod

Capt. Rich Antonino
April 23, 2007
Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cod fishing and whale watching on Stellwagen Bank

Today was a great day to be on the water fishing. We had sun all day, no wind, and flat seas. There was a little swell, but we were still able to cruise comfortably at 35 mph. That made travel time as minimal as possible. We left from Plymouth Harbor to avoid any possible delays in Green Harbor, and the scenery was awesome. I don't forget how beautiful the harbor is, with its historic sites and great landscapes. We fished for much of the morning on the eastern edge of Stellwagen in our usual haunts, but the fishing there was tough, to say the least. It was very slow, with just a pick of haddock and cod. I was hoping for some of the action that we had there before the storm hit last week. It wasn't to be. I made the decision to make a 13 mile run north to the top of Stellwagen Bank in shoal water. The decision was rewarded well. There was a flotilla of every boat in Mass there! If you've read a fishing report, you saw their boat there. The fish were in shallow water, 100-120', feeding on sand eels. The whales were there too and it was an amazing sight. Look for whales and you'll find the bait and you'll find the fish. We used jigs and light tackle gear. That was a blast for my customers. Rods bent in half, light gear and lots of laughs. Most of the fish were in the 20-23" range, but we did eke out a fair amount of keepers to send everyone home with some meals. We've had more productive days for keepers, but the action made up for it. If we had been on top of them all day, we'd have caught more than enough keepers, that's for sure. Great time on the water and we hope to see them again this summer. The weather looks like it's finally warming up. WEDNESDAY LOOKS AMAZING. I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING SCHEDULED, SO IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN CALLING IN SICK OR SPENDING SOME RETIREMENT TIME ON THE WATER, GIVE ME A CALL AND WE'LL GET YOU OUT THERE IN SHALLOW WATER AMONGST THE WHALES CATCHING COD (ON LIGHT TACKLE, IF YOU LIKE). Have fun out there, Capt. Rich Antonino Black Rose Fishing Charters 508-269-1882 www.blackrosefishing.com
