Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report
A sea bass trip to forget in Buzzards Bay. Or, what the weatherman didn't want to tell us. Either way, you shouldn't have been there yesterday.
Well, I'm not one to cherry-pick fishing reports and only give you the good stuff, so, here it is. It was tough today fishing from Buzzards Bay on a 1/2 day charter for sea bass. I mean tough is not a strong enough word. Enough reliving that in my mind. Conditions-wise, they were tough. The wind wasn't the 5-10 mph from the west, but rather 20-25 from the SW. This, combined with a strong incoming tide, had us drifting way too fast, even with the parachute.
We made the move before the tide turned to fish along the scup fleet, where we could have anchored up and hit the scup, but we made the decision to keep looking for the sea bass. The fleet was a mile and a half to the west of Cleveland Ledge. I marked lots of fish there and we put a few in the boat, but left there pretty quickly. Last year, same time, we were up to our elbows in sea bass already. I think that the cold spring is keeping the fish back a week or so. I'm still excited to get back there and do some more fishing. With the winds blowing hard, we didn't want to be fishing south of Wings Neck with the current flowing into the strong SW wind. I've seen 10' standing waves in that area and no fish is worth running through seas like that.
I had a friend fishing for cod and haddock on Stellwagen yesterday--the seas were flat calm and the fishing was incredible! He landed a pile of redfish and later beat up on haddock while bait fishing. Oh well. That's fishing. Speaking of cod fishing---I HAVE TWO SPOTS AVAILABLE, LAST MINUTE, ON THURSDAY'S UNANNOUNCED SHARED CHARTER FOR COD AND HADDOCK. CALL CAPT. RICH AT 508-269-1882.
