Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
March 1, 2001
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE

TEMPERATURES: High of 71 with a low of 56. Still unusually cold

STRIPED MARLIN - Little activity this week.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Only a few this week.

DORADO - A few dorado throughout the bay

ROOSTERFISH - Good action from Buena Vista Beach Resort to Scott Glenn’s house.

JACK CREVALLE - A few mixed in with the roosters and sierra along the shore.

BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Muertos bay produced the best catches

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Not much action this week.

.. OFFSHORE: Still inconsistent conditions .

.. INSHORE: A few dorado and skipjack provided good action.

.. BEACH: Good conditions Monday and Tuesday of this week

.. QUICK COMMENT - Jeff Solis reported excellent beach fishing for the last several days. On Tuesday using a small blue and white alf pattern caught fifteen roosters, ten ladyfish and six trumpet fish. Here is a recent report from Ted Andradi:

I had a great time fishing with Jeff DeBrown this last week. He's an excellent guide. Guide Jeff Solis was also very gracious to my wife and I. My passion is catching as many species as possible on fly. I got 12 for the week: roosterfish (1), dorado (4), black Skipjack (8+), reef cornetfish (lots), spotted cabrilla (1), flag cabrilla (1), panamanian graysby (1), lizardfish (1), scorpion fish (1), pacific moonfish (lots), toro (2), lobeskin puffer (1).

Not a ton of fish, but the wind blew a gale most days. I had a great time and I'll be back!

Some quick recommendations: bring lots of olive and brown clousers (size 1-1/0 ish) to lose in the rocks; use 16# flouro for everything; bring at least an 8 and a 10 wt; don't bother with floating lines; if you want to keep fishing in the afternoon after your BOF trip, hit the rocks that are about 2 mi north and 2 mi south from Hotel Buena Vista. It's pot luck, but the Cornetfish are always biting and the walk is nice.

MAGDALENA BAY

Temperatures: 69-degree high; low 55.

TUNA - No one targeted them this week.

YELLOWTAIL - Good fishing near the Entrada (entrance).

CORVINA - Fair catches in estero south of San Carlos.

SNOOK - Still good fishing in several esteros less than 30 minutes from

Puerto San Carlos.

HALIBUT - Plenty of smaller fish to 8 lbs.

.. QUICK COMMENT - Finally some nice weather and a good yellowtail bite near the Entrada..
