Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report
Anglers Green With Envy
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., March 17, 2001 – Happy St. Paddy’s Day!
TEMPERATURES: High of 77 with a low of 62.
STRIPED MARLIN - Slow.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Take your pick: either run to Cerralvo Island or run all
the way to the Gordo Bank.
DORADO - A few dorado throughout the bay.
ROOSTERFISH - Mostly smaller fish close to shore.
JACK CREVALLE - A few small fish are hanging n front of the hotels.
BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Few caught.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Good near shore at Punta Colorada or Cerro Verde.
.. OFFSHORE: The hunt continues with boats running long distances to try to
find action for their clients. A few boats took the 2-1/2 hour ride to the
Gordo Bank and were rewarded with some yellowfin tuna to 25 pounds.
.. INSHORE: Small jacks and sierra continue to provide fair action close to
shore.
.. BEACH: A few small roosters and jacks early morning and late afternoon.
.. QUICK COMMENT - Cold, off-color water is still prevalent throughout the
area. 68-½ degree water is the warmest that has been reported. Gordo Bank is
holding some good sized tuna for those who choose to take the long boat ride
there. To the north, Cerralvo Island is producing some catches of tuna and
small yellowtail on a inconsistent basis.
Yvonne (who broke her foot during the San Mateo show) is sporting a new
walking cast and we are headed for Phoenix for the International Sportsman’s
Expo beginning on Thurs., March 22. I will be presenting my Baja on the Fly
program at the following times: 5 p.m. Thurs, 22; 2 p.m. Fri., 23; and 11
a.m. Sun., 25. Stop by and say hello if you attend the show.

Temperatures: 69-degree high; low 57.
TUNA - Not fished this week.
YELLOWTAIL - Entrada is still the best bet.
CORVINA - Few reported this week.
SNOOK - Slow going this week with only a few anglers out.
HALIBUT - Continue to be a good bet for the fly rodder.
.. QUICK COMMENT - This week's action centered around cabrilla, jacks and a
few halibut. The snook and corvina just didn't want to bite this week.
Operations Assistant Named
NEWS RELEASE:
Jeff Solis, long active in Southern California and Mexican saltwater
fly-fishing, has been named Operations Assistant by Baja on the Fly,
announced Gary and Yvonne Graham.
Solis has averaged 50 days a year fishing and guiding other fly-fishers in
Baja since 1995. He previously guided while attending college in Colorado
from 1989 to 1994 and subsequently operated the San Diego Fly Shop, which he
sold in 1999.
According to the Grahams, “As Operations Assistant, Jeff will work with fly
shops throughout the United States bringing groups to Baja, will interface
with fly-fishing clubs, manage booths at trade and consumer fishing shows,
conduct seminars for novice saltwater fly-fishers, and perform guide and
supervisor functions at both the East Cape and Magdalena Bay.”
In addition to Solis being a licensed and bonded fly-fishing guide in the
State of California, he writes about the sport extensively. His article on
“Fly Fishing the San Diego Coast” appears in the April issue of California
Fly Fisher magazine.
