Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

Billfish Baby Strikes Again

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., May 26, 2001

TEMPERATURES: High of 97 with a low of 74 and some wind in the afternoon.

STRIPED MARLIN - Plenty on the Eighty Eight as well as in front of La

Ribera. A few blues and lots of sailfish.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Cabo Pulmo producing fair catches, but mostly down deep and

not good for the fly-fisher.

DORADO - From 10 miles off of Punta Pescadero to the Eighty-Eight is

producing some of the larger variety, up to 50 pounds.

..

ROOSTERFISH - Good show every morning in front of Rancho Leonero and

Buenavista Beach Hotel.

JACK CREVALLE - Good catches continue from both the pontoon boat and the

shore.

BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few scattered everywhere.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - A Few in front of Rancho Buena Vista.

.. OFFSHORE: Good catches reported by all the hotels. For the fly angler, it

has been tough because the fish are just not real aggressive on artificials.

.. INSHORE: Plenty of roosters every morning in front of both Rancho Leonero

and the Buenavista Beach Hotel. However, with the huge amount of bait in

the water it is tough to get them to take a fly.

.. BEACH: La Ribera continues to hold lots of sardinia and the afternoons

have been great for jacks chasing the sardinia.

.. QUICK COMMENT - Mark and Becky Rogers, Gilroy, Calif., had a slow first

day on the pontoon boat. But on their second day, the bites kept coming and

coming and coming and when it was all over, they’d caught, roosters, jacks,

sierra and pargo all within casting distance of Rancho Leonero pier. Glenn

Starr, our resident fly tier down Mexico-way from San Diego to conduct

saltwater fly-tying seminars for our clients, went out yesterday morning on

Mosca 1 with our guide Jeff DeBrown and enticed an estimated 125 pound

striped marlin with one of our "Billfish Babies" that he ties for us. A pink

and white number was just what the marlin was looking for.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., May 25, 2001

Temperatures: 78-degree high; low in the mid 60's. Fair skies with wind in

the afternoon.

TUNA - No catches reported.

YELLOWTAIL - Fair catches near Santa Margarita Island on the surface.

CORVINA - Good catches near Punta Belcher close to the sandy beach.

SNOOK - Not much to report.

HALIBUT - Not bad near Punta Belcher

.. QUICK COMMENT - Good white seabass bite near Punta Belcher. If you had a

white whistler with a red collar it was hard to go wrong.
