Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jacks or Better to Open
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., June 02, 2001
TEMPERATURES: High of 90 with a low of 72 and some breezes in the afternoon.
STRIPED MARLIN - A good spread of fish, but still not very aggressive.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Fair catches at the both ends of the bay, but not a
consistent bite.
DORADO - From 10 to 20 miles off of Punta Pescadero producing some of the
larger variety, up to 50 pounds. However, they’re still not grouped up.
ROOSTERFISH - La Ribera was the hot spot this week. There were also plenty
of singles seen feeding on mullet along rooster alley.
JACK CREVALLE - Good catches continue from both the pontoon boat and the
shore with La Ribera being the best bet.
BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few scattered everywhere.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Best bet was Punta Colorada this week..
.. OFFSHORE: Billfish and dorado dominated the scene. Most of the dorado are
of the larger variety with a few smaller ones found around some of the shark
buoys. Few sailfish and blues, but plenty of stripers seen every day.
.. INSHORE: Close to shore from Rancho Buena Vista to La Ribera producing
good jack and rooster fishing.
.. BEACH: It just can't get much better than La Ribera was this week with
lots of jacks, roosters, ladyfish and even a few halibut caught this week.
.. QUICK COMMENT - Mike Duckworth, Orange, Calif., fishing with two friends,
had a great day chasing roosters and jacks in front of La Ribera on a beach
trip yesterday. Meanwhile, my friend Don Sloan and I spent the early morning
fishing the same beach and had six different species including roosters and
jacks to 15 pounds. One of my new see-through deep divers in gray and white
with grizzly hackle was the hot fly. Stripped very slowly, it produced two
back-to-back jacks that wanted to rumble. The second one had all my backing
except for seven or eight wraps on the spool. He finally turned and I had my
photograph after a 30 minute battle.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., June 02, 2001
Temperatures: 76-degree high; low in the mid 60's. Fair skies with little
wind in the afternoon.
TUNA - No catches reported.
YELLOWTAIL - Santa Margarita Island producing a few.
CORVINA - Punta Belcher is holding a few larger fish to seven pounds.
SNOOK - Mario's spot holding a few fish.
HALIBUT - None reported
.. QUICK COMMENT - After several weeks of the olive Clousers being the fly of
choice, we are back to using the chartreuse and white Clousers that has been
so productive in the past. Jim Nesmick, Napa, Calif., found out how tough
our Magdalena Bay snook can be when a monster inhaled his chartreuse and
white Clouser and headed down the estero. After a brief tug of war, the
fish showed who was boss when he dove under a mangrove root and cut the 20
pound tippet.
