Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fish Will ROck You

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., July 21, 2001

TEMPERATURES: High of 91 with a low of 80. Strong winds in the afternoon.

STRIPED MARLIN - Fair to good.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - The La Ribera bite only lasted two days and now the school

seems to be scattered.

DORADO – A few being found early morning around the shark buoys. Larger fish

found in open water.

ROOSTERFISH - Good inshore action continues early morning and mid-afternoon.

JACK CREVALLE - The bigger fish returned this week.

BARRILLETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Not much reported this week.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Reef in front of Hotel Rancho Leonero producing fair

catches.

.. OFFSHORE: A few blues and about an equal number of sails and striped

marlin scattered throughout the bay.

.. INSHORE: Roosterfish, jacks and sierra were the mainstay this week.

.. BEACH: Roosterfish strung out all along the beach from RBV to La Ribera.

.. QUICK COMMENT - I was sitting on my porch yesterday afternoon and a fellow

and his wife stopped in front of the house. He began fishing while she

sun-bathed. A little later, I hear the guy whooping and hollering and

telling his

wife to get the camera because he is hooked up to a "pez gallo" (it’s

amazing how sound travels on the beach). He brings it in and they

photograph what appears to be a 10 pound rooster. A little later I went down

the beach to check on one our boats coming in and he whistles to get my

attention. He tells me that he has read my book and that is what got him

excited about fly-fishing the beach. He had just caught his first rooster

and he couldn't thank me enough for writing the book. I thanked him and he

is going to stop by today (Sat.) with his book so I can sign it.

That has been the story this week: Spend some time on the beach and you are

going to get the shots at old pez gallo.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., July 21, 2001

Temperatures: 90-degree high; low 70. Overcast with some rain.

MARLIN - More every week.

DORADO - Most of the fish are smaller school fish with a few larger ones

mixed in.

TUNA - Still little action.

YELLOWTAIL - Didn't hear of any this week.

CORVINA - Still good.

SNOOK – Devil’s Curve producing fair action as well as under the bridge at

the

entrance to town.

HALIBUT - Not much this week.

.. QUICK COMMENT - Heard an interesting report from some of the commercial

shark fisherman. Their shark buoys are currently 35 miles out on a 240

degree heading from the entrada. They report that there are numerous marlin

and smaller dorado out in that area. Closer to shore on the south side of

the entrada on the outside there has been a pretty good pargo bite in deeper

water. You will need a 10-weight with a 350 to 400 grain head to get a super

Clouser down where they are hanging out. If you try it, be sure to hang on

for dear life or they will rock you in a heart
