Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

WED., SEPT. 19, 2001
EAST CAPE, Wed., Sept. 19, 2001
Sea Temperature: 80-87. Air Temperature: 95-74.
.. IN GENERAL: This week, the inshore action has been dazzling for dorado and
tuna to 20 pounds. The action was fast and furious with double digit counts
being the norm. Every once-in-awhile Big Fish Bubba would cruise through the
chum line and if the angler was lucky, take the fly being retrieved rapidly
and head for Mazatlan with the fly hanging from the corner of it's mouth.
Air
travel has been restored and most of the airlines are flying at least 60% of
their schedule. I am headed down today (Wed.) and am looking forward to
a few days on the water. We are beginning our fall season with several
groups
fishing the East Cape area during Oct., and then I will finish up with the
Flyrod Marlin 101 series at Magdalena Bay.
.. OFFSHORE: Most of the boats are still taking advantage of the hot dorado
and tuna bite.
.. INSHORE: Plenty of dorado and tuna and few people or boats.
.. BEACH: Perfect way to start and finish the day. Hit the beach as the sun
comes up and you may end up with the rooster of your dreams.
BILLFISH - Not worth the effort right now.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Some of the best action this year.
DORADO - Never fails: no people and fish are eating the paint off the bottom
of
the boats.
ROOSTERFISH - Mostly smaller fish scattered up and down the East Cape
beaches.
JACK CREVALLE - I suspect these are the ones that got away this week.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few scattered throughout Las Palmas Bay.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Good fishing near Punta Colorada for the few that
targeted them.
Thanks to everyone who took the time last week to go to our website and
order
my new book, “The No Nonsense Guide to Fly Fishing Magdalena Bay.” All of
those books were shipped out yesterday. If you would like your own

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Wed., Sept. 19, 2001
.. IN GENERAL: Strong afternoon winds continued to hamper the fishing this
week. With the shrimp season opening this week, most of the focus of the
locals was on that fishery. Nope, they won't take a fly. Looking at the Sea
Surface Temperature maps provided by Terrfin, it would appear that the sea
temps are remaining constant which promises better offshore fishing in the
next few weeks.
Temperatures: 86-degree high; low 73. Windy in the afternoons and some high
clouds.
MARLIN - High spots the best bet.
DORADO - Thetis Bank or the shark buoys providing the best action.
TUNA - Seem to be hanging out around the high spots.
YELLOWTAIL - Pretty quiet this week
CORVINA - You don't have to go very far. Try the bridge at the entrance to
Puerto San Carlos.
SNOOK - Not much action this week.
SIERRA - Quiet.
PARGO & GROUPER - Best catches down at Alemejas Bay.
