Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

Returning to Normal
EAST CAPE, Wed., Oct. 10, 2001
Sea Temperature: N/A. Air Temperature: 85 high to 72 low.
.. IN GENERAL: I'm back! Twelve days with no power, cold showers, short
supplies and now it is time to go fishing. Tuna and dorado are being caught
in good numbers by most of the boats. And with all the debris in the water,
I can only imagine that it will get better. Inshore we're still finding lots
of dirty water with only a few areas really fishable. It seems to change a
little every day. La Ribera produced some good roosterfish action two days
ago and yesterday it was off color and no fish. On the other hand, Punta
Colorada produced some fair action for pargo yesterday and a few roosters
and jacks the day before. Both large baits and sardinia have been available
for purchase this week.
.. OFFSHORE: Action is spread out throughout the bay with boats seen
departing in every direction. Billfish continue to be disappointing, but the
larger tuna to 60 pounds and dorado as well are filling in the slack.
.. INSHORE: Water is slowly cleaning up and fishing is improving.
.. BEACH: In the 20 years that I have traveled up and down the beach it has
never been this blown out. Most of the arroyos still have running water in
them and are wider than the locals can remember them ever being. Even with
the ATVs it is difficult to get very far in either direction. Every day we
get a little further and we are beginning to see a few jacks, roosters, and
pargo along the shore.
BILLFISH - Pretty slow.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Saw a few in the 60 pound class being unloaded yesterday.
DORADO - They are here and if you find the right group, double digit catches
are the norm.
ROOSTERFISH - Inconsistent.
JACK CREVALLE - Look for fish breaking on bait a short cast from the beach.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty along the trash line a few miles
offshore.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - One of the reefs near Punta Colorada produced a few up
to 10 pounds.

.. IN GENERAL: While the fishing reports have been sketchy since the storm,
all indications are the fishing inside the esteros has improved. Offshore,
the best report was on a good tuna bite with only a few marlin and dorado
seen this week. With calmer conditions I expect more activity later in the
week.
Temperatures: 80 during the day, 65 at night.
MARLIN - A few fish spotted by yachts traveling down the coast.
DORADO - Shark buoys still the best bet.
TUNA - One long range boat reported excellent catches a few miles above the
Thetis Bank.
YELLOWTAIL - No report.
CORVINA - A few near the bridge at the entrance to town.
SNOOK - Mario's spot produced a few smaller fish.
SIERRA - No report.
PARGO & GROUPER - Best bet up near Devils Curve.
