Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
October 17, 2001
Sea Temperature: 80-84. Air Temperature: 87 high to 65 low.
.. IN GENERAL – Good fishing prevailed in every direction from the hotels. The trick was finding a hungry school early and making every cast count. See Through deceivers, streamers with lots of flash all worked well on the dorado. It was not wide open for the fly flingers but those who worked at it came back with grins on their faces. Weather this week with the exception of a sometimes-strong breeze in the afternoon. This morning the thermometer showed the lowest temperature since spring a frigid 65 degrees.
Because of the recent storm a feature we had planned to run didn’t get put into the report several weeks ago. Here is the website and the page speaks for itself.

Skip Zink and his band of buddies from Reno Nevada were kept busy all week with a variety of fish ranging from larger dorado, tuna, skipjack, jacks etc. They finised up Tuesday and are already planning their next visit as is the members of the Reel Life Group from Santa Fe and Albuquerque NM. Dorado, tuna, skipjack from the beach and they even had a couple dorado hooked from the beach they failed to land. Speaking of beaches the beach below Rancho Leonero extending all the way to Punta Arena is a mess. The best fishing right now is from Palmas de Cortez beach to Punta Pescadero with jacks, ladyfish, skipjack and an occasional rooster providing the action
.. OFFSHORE: Dorado and tuna continued to offer the best action with fish in any direction from the hotels.
.. INSHORE: Still of color but improving daily one of the sleeper spots this week was just a few miles off of Punta Pescadero.
.. BEACH: The best action we have found is north of Los Barriles, but it is an on-again
off-again proposition. Water is clearing up and if you hit the beach at gray light your chances are good for some hot flyrod action for jacks and roosters.
BILLFISH – Not many boat targeting them but the action continues to improve.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Good catches from footballs to the grandes.
DORADO – Still pretty good and gets better as the water continues to clean up
ROOSTERFISH – Still hit or miss.
JACK CREVALLE – Found fair action at Punta Arena from a panga.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty along the trash line a few miles
offshore.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few of the reefs holding fish, but it's difficult to
predict.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

.. IN GENERAL: The inshore report this week was one on the best we have had in a while. Devils curve produced excellent catches of snook, grouper and pargo. Reports from the outside are sketchy but definitely sound like things are improving with some wahoo, dorado and lots of football tuna.
Temperatures: 82 during the day, 75 at night.
MARLIN - A few fish reported by local panga
DORADO - Shark buoys still the best bet.
TUNA – Mostly above the bank.
YELLOWTAIL – Came back with a bang at the Entrada.
CORVINA - A few near the bridge at the entrance to town.
SNOOK – The fall winter bite is beginning.
SIERRA - No report.
PARGO & GROUPER - Don't overlook Devils Curve for some good action on
chartreuse Clousers.
