Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
October 20, 2001
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat, October 20, 2001

Sea Temperature: 80-84. Air Temperature: 89 high to 75 low.

.. IN GENERAL – This is the time of year that the our time is the same as California because Daylight Savings Time ends in Baja the end of September. Because of this it allows to be on the beach at 5:30 in the morning for gray light and the fishing has been worth the effort. Skipjack or what our friends from the East call False Albacore are slamming the Sardinia all along the beach above Los Barriles where the arroyo “Buenos Aires dumps into the Sea of Cortez. White See Through Deceivers cast into the middle of the fray is likely to be picked up and drug out to deeper water quicker than you can say “Fish On!”. Plenty of other fish are mixed in as well; jacks, lookdowns, ladyfish and we have even seen a couple small dorado in casting range of the beach. I made one of my quickie trips home Thursday and the Peninsula from Muelege down is the greenest I have ever seen. The roads all the way to San Diego where fine with quite a few wash outs but easily passable. I arrived at the border at 8:14 P.M. and only had a seventeen minute wait.

.. OFFSHORE: Dorado and tuna continued to offer the best action

.. INSHORE: Still of color but improving daily one of the sleeper spots this week was just a few miles off of Punta Pescadero.

.. BEACH: Chris Sorenson, Baja on the Fly Guide provided this report: The beach was the best I had seen it all week. I caught 7 skipjack, two roosters, and various others like a lookdown and some cornet. I also fished the first rock outcropping before Rancho Leonero and had to leave because I was tired of catching jacks, I lost count at ten. Also some cabrilla there at the rocks..

BILLFISH – Seems slow but few boats are targeting billfish so it is hard to judge.

YELLOWFIN TUNA – Smaller ones at Cabo Pulmo and La Ribera the larger variety under the porpoise schools.

DORADO – Plenty of action under the floating debris.

ROOSTERFISH – The water along the beach is cleaning up nicely and more fish reported this week.

JACK CREVALLE – Same thing cleaner water and the action has improved .

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty along the trash line a few miles

Offshore as well as on the beach.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few of the reefs holding fish, but it's difficult to

predict.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat, October 20, 2001

.. IN GENERAL: With more boats arriving every day the reports are starting come in. Lots of small tuna, wahoo on the high spots, dorado but few marlin reported being seen. John Barnes Captain of the Mary Lee reported excellent wahoo fishing while anchored on the Thetis several night ago. Inshore al the stock spots including Devils Curve, Mario’s spot and for those of you who don’t want to go to fare try near or under the bridge at the entrance to town..

Temperatures: 82 during the day, 73 at night.

MARLIN - A few fish reported here and there but no groups seen as of yet

DORADO - Shark buoys or anything floatingstill the best bet.

TUNA – Mostly near the high spots.

YELLOWTAIL – Good fishing at the Entrada down deep, you will need to use a shooting head.

CORVINA - A few near the bridge at the entrance to town.

SNOOK – The fall winter bite is beginning.

SIERRA – A fair bite out near Belcher Point.

PARGO & GROUPER - Don't overlook Devils Curve for some good action on

chartreuse Clousers.
