Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
October 27, 2001
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., Oct. 27, 2001

Sea Temperature: 80-86. Air Temperature: 87 high to 75 low.

.. IN GENERAL - The last few days have produced some of the best beach

fishing we have seen all year. Inshore, the dorado continue to be crowd

pleasers with plenty of tuna and skipjack to back them up. Even the

billfish, particularly the sailfish, have picked up this week.

.. OFFSHORE: Most of the boats are hitting the inshore first thing and then

working out to the outside looking for blues, stripers and sailfish for the

lucky ones.

.. INSHORE: Good fishing continued for roosters, jacks, sierra, skipjack as

well as a good dorado bite are keeping the panga fleet happy.

.. BEACH: Lance Peterson, a Pacific Northwester from Chimicum, Wash.,

arrived last week to help guiding our clients and reported that the beach

was as good as he had ever seen it. Here is his instant message from Fri.

(10/26):

"Well, it's about 11:20 and I've just come off the beach for lunch. More

great fishing this morning, but a bit of wind has just came up and the fish

went down a bit. Caught small roosters, small jack crevalle, big ladyfish,

needles, and many skipjack. I neglected to mention some of the more

interesting aspects of the fishing yesterday - namely, the strange flies

that have been the top producers. I've been having most of my luck in the

muddy water at the estero mouths fishing small, bright flies that I use for

sea-run cutthroat back home. A size 8, bright orange cone head fly we call

the 'snot dart' has been unbeatable! As have been size 6 and 8 hot pink

Clousers."

Most of the hotels are offering special deals and airfares have not been

this low in a long time. Give Yvonne a call for more information about some

of the specials being offered.

BILLFISH - A few blues and stripes, but the sailfish were the most

prevalent.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Smaller ones at Cabo Pulmo and La Ribera. Some big guys

(100+) are showing up under the porpoise schools.

DORADO - Shark buoys in front of Punta Pescadero are a good place to start.

ROOSTERFISH - Lots of smaller fish at the first arroyo past Palmas de Cortez

hotel toward Punta Pescadero.

JACK CREVALLE - Same story: smaller fish with a few larger guys in the

mid-teens.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - The beaches continue to produce fish up to

five pounds from the shore.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rocky points are holding a few quality pargo.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., Oct. 27, 2001

.. IN GENERAL: I can't believe it is only a few more days and we will begin

the Flyrod Marlin 101 series. While the reports have been spotty for

billfish, the best we heard was one boat that reported raising 4 - 8 fish a

day. The wahoo, dorado and tuna reports have been good. Water currents and

temperatures still need to settle down a bit and it appears that is starting

to happen. With more boats arriving in the area every day. I expect the

fleet to locate the main body of fish in short order. Because of a change of

plans, we do have two last minute openings for Marlin 101 trips departing

Nov. 22 and 29. Call Yvonne for more details at 800 919 2252.

Enrique Soto reported some hot action up in the esteros (estuaries). Snook,

grouper and pargo provided great action for the few anglers. The best action

was up in the vicinity of Devil's Curve. Just outside the entrada (entrance)

several boats reported lots of dorado near the shark buoys.

Temperatures: 84 during the day, 75 at night.

MARLIN - Not many groups seen, but more fish reported this week.

DORADO - Shark buoys west of the entrada have been good producers.

TUNA - Strung all up and down the ridge.

YELLOWTAIL - Good fishing at the entrada down deep. You will need to use a

fast sinking shooting head.

CORVINA - Try up by the power plant .

SNOOK - Devil's Curve produced several larger fish and I expect Mario's spot

would produce good action as well.

SIERRA - A fair bite out near sand beaches.

PARGO & GROUPER -Chartreuse Clousers down deep with slow retrieve are

producing some good catches of five to 10 pound fish.
