Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
December 13, 2001
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

.. IN GENERAL: Guide Jeff DeBrown has been on our Marlin 101 trip out of

Magdalena Bay the past few days, so this report is from hotel skippers and

assorted faithful fly-fishing fanatic friends.

Boat skippers are all talking about the dorado, skipjack, and bonito that

have been congregating between Punta Pescadero and Punta Pedico. The tuna

and a few marlin are to the south along with some sierra, jacks, and

amberjack mixed in.

In case you haven’t seen it, we recommend a story on ESPN Outdoors by writer

Brett Pauly. Just click on the link below:

http://espn.go.com/outdoors/fishing/s/f_fea_East_Cape_inshore_fly.html

.. OFFSHORE: When the winds blow and the water kicks up, things are tough.

The tuna bite has been fair to strong to the south. There is a fair number

of marlin for this time of year.

.. INSHORE: Expect good action with small- to medium-sized roosters at the

first arroyo north of Los Barriles. There are some of the other species

mixed in as well, but roosters predominate. Also try the La Rivera area.

.. BEACH: Try directly in front of Hotel Rancho Leonero. There have been

good numbers of fair-sized roosters and some ladyfish. If looking for

sierra, try in front of La Rivera. The numbers continue increasing daily.

AIR & SEA: Air temperature high 70s to low-80s and a dream come true. When

the wind backs off, things are just great. With no storms in sight, the

winds have been pleasantly calm.

BILLFISH – The Pacific side at Magdalena Bay is the place to go for

billfish, but we are still seeing fair numbers for this time of year.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Right now they’re from La Rivera to the lighthouse. As

usual, they’re up one minute and breezing past you the next.

DORADO - Day by day. As always, floating structure and buoys are a good bet.

ROOSTERFISH - Lots of smaller fish with the occasional Papa Bubba along the

shore at the arroyo north of Los Barriles up to Punta Pescadero. Some very

nice fish continue showing at Hotel Leonero and in front of La Rivera.

JACK CREVALLE – You know jacks! In and out. A school will sweep the beach

one second and be gone the next. The numbers are not strong yet.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK – Hard to find.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rocky points are holding a few quality pargo, with good

fishing at Rancho Leonero. Several quality fish reported down by Punta

Colorado.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., Dec. 12, 2001

.. IN GENERAL: Marlin!, Marlin!, Marlin! That cry was heard loud and

frequently on the 6th and final trip of our Flyrod Marlin 101 Series. Our

guests this week were John Cole and his wife Charlotte “Acha” Lord from

Reading, Mass., longtime client Michael Uremovich, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and

our East Cape guide Jeff DeBrown. All were looking for their first marlin

on the fly and nobody was disappointed.

With multiple shots daily, they were all able to add striped marlin to their

personal lifetime species list. Pink Billfish Babies were just what the

marlin wanted as they came charging into the pattern slashing at the

hookless teasers. Flat calm weather prevailed for five of the six days with

a cold front arriving yesterday (12/11), the final day. However, this did

not deter the marlin and we came into the anchorage in the dark once again

last night.

Today, we are headed for the pier and dry land after 36 days on the boat I

am ready go home and get an “Yvonne fix.” It is just as well we are not

fishing today because it is much rougher than yesterday and probably will

remain that way for several days. This trip concludes our 2001 series and in

spite of less fish this season than last, it still has all the earmarks of a

success. More on that next week after I return to California. I will send

out a synopsis and the statistics of the entire series. If you are not on

our e-mailing list and would like to receive the report, just e-mail me at

[email protected] and I will send a copy to you.

Three of our 2002 trips are already sold out and we have scattered

additional bookings for the other three. If you are in any way considering

marlin on a fly, call our office for the latest availability for next year.

AIR & SEA: Cool mornings, warm days and jackets at night. When the winds

blow, it can be a little bumpy, but all-in-all it has to be considered near

perfect. In the mangroves, it's still T-shirts and shorts.

MARLIN - Large concentration of fish from 20 west of the anchorage at Santa

Maria to 20 west of the entrada.

DORADO - A few here and there, but no bonanza.

TUNA - A few schools still up on the Thetis Bank and we saw several larger

schools mixed in with the porpoise yesterday west of the entrada.

YELLOWTAIL - Not many this week

CORVINA – Continues good to very good to downright excellent.

SNOOK – We haven’t heard of any monsters, but lots of 6- to 9-pounders.

HALIBUT – About the same.

SIERRA - A few caught near the entrance to Santa Maria Bay.

My new book, "The No Nonsense Guide to Fly Fishing Magdalena Bay," is now
