Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Saturday, December 15, 2001
.. IN GENERAL: Guide Jeff DeBrown and I returned to East Cape late Wednesday afternoon and were greeted the next morning with a howling north wind. Must be December. All of the hotels only have a few guest and are expecting more for the holidays.
.. OFFSHORE: When the winds blow and the water kicks up, things are tough.
.. INSHORE: Same problem, when the wind blows even getting out can be difficult.
.. BEACH: Hit the beach before sunup and you may be able to get in some fair fishing before the wind comes up.
AIR & SEA: Air temperature low 60’s to mid-70’s are not bad for this time of year. . When the wind backs off, things are just great
BILLFISH – The Pacific side at Magdalena Bay is the place to go for
billfish.
YELLOWFIN TUNA – No reports.
DORADO - Day by day. As always, floating structure and buoys are a good bet.
ROOSTERFISH – OK when the wind stops blowing .
JACK CREVALLE – You know jacks! In and out. A school will sweep the beach
one second and be gone the next. The numbers are not strong yet.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK – Hard to find.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rocky points are holding a few quality pargo, with good
fishing at Rancho Leonero. Several quality fish reported down by Punta
Colorado.

.. IN GENERAL: Our last day the first of several cold fronts came roaring into the area and the both inshore and offshore was barely fishable. When the weather settles down I would expect the fishing offshore to be going full speed based on the number of fish we saw on our last day (Tuesday) I will send out a synopsis and the statistics of the entire series sometime later next week. If you are not on

Three of our 2002 trips are already sold out and we have scattered
additional bookings for the other three. If you are in any way considering
marlin on a fly, call our office for the latest availability for next year.
AIR & SEA: Windy and cold with some sprinkles.
MARLIN - Large concentration of fish from 20 west of the anchorage at Santa
Maria to 20 west of the entrada.
DORADO - A few here and there, but no bonanza.
TUNA - A few schools still up on the Thetis Bank and we saw several larger
schools mixed in with the porpoise yesterday west of the entrada.
YELLOWTAIL - Not many this week
CORVINA – Continues good to very good to downright excellent.
SNOOK – We haven’t heard of any monsters, but lots of 6- to 9-pounders.
HALIBUT – About the same.
SIERRA - A few caught near the entrance to Santa Maria Bay.
